Dentures are false teeth that are made of acrylic, nylon or metal and are completely removable. Dentures fit over the gums, replacing missing teeth and eliminating any potential problems that can be caused by gaps in your mouth. This includes issues with eating and speech as well as giving you the confidence to smile again.
There are two variations of dentures to choose from depending on how many teeth you lose:
- Complete dentures – a full set of teeth that replace all your upper or lower teeth
- Partial dentures – a section of teeth that replace either one or a few missing teeth
Both of these types can be constructed in different materials, as well as customised teeth, in order to provide you with a fully functioning smile.

Complete Denture
Complete dentures offer a solution when you are missing all of your teeth on either the top or bottom gum, or in some situations both. With full dentures, a flesh-coloured acrylic base is attached to the false teeth that fits over your gums. On upper dentures, the base covers the palate to keep the denture secure in your mouth. The lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate your tongue. At our bespoke denture clinic, dentures are custom-made to the individual in a dental laboratory from impressions taken of your mouth, your dentures will be made perfectly for your mouth.
If you are unfortunate enough to have to lose your remaining teeth, full dentures are placed in your mouth after all of your teeth have been extracted and the tissues have had time to heal. Healing can take several months, so this would mean having no teeth for this period of time. There are, however, solutions to this at our bespoke denture clinic. An immediate full denture is available, which is inserted immediately after your teeth have been removed. While these have the benefit of you having no time without teeth, they will need to be relined or possibly replaced once your gums have fully healed as this can change the shape of your mouth.
Partial Denture
Partial dentures are designed to fill in any gaps that are left in the mouth by one or more missing teeth. They are created using a plastic, nylon or metal frameworks that have a number of false teeth attached to it. These usually clip onto some of your natural teeth with metal clasps that hold them securely in your mouth. At our bespoke denture clinic, our dentists will be able to take impressions and construct your custom-made partial denture, ensuring it will fit perfectly in your mouth. Alternatively, you could consider a bridge or implants to replace missing teeth and fill the gaps, but a partial denture is a great simple removable option.
Implant Supported Denture
An implant supported denture is a type of denture that is held in place by implants, rather than just resting on the gum as a normal denture does. Implant retained dentures are used to give much greater confidence and security to a denture, significantly reducing unwanted movement of your false teeth. These dentures have special attachments that snap onto the implant in the mouth to keep them in place. These are more typically made for the lower jaw as this is where regular dentures tend to be less stable, however they can also be used to support your upper denture. Implant supported dentures should still be removed daily allowing you to clean both the denture and gum area. Dental implants can also be used to get rid of your dentures completely by providing bridges or crowns to fill spaces that are fixed in the mouth permanently – as near as you can get to real teeth!
Poor Fitting Denture
Poor fitting dentures are a common problem we come across at our bespoke denture clinic that should not be tolerated. Any problems with dentures could be an indication that they need to be adjusted or replaced allowing you to get on with your everyday life without worrying about problems with your dentures. Dentures should be comfortable and at no point should they come loose unexpectedly. There are occasions where small amounts of adhesives need to be used for a reliable hold, but if you find they are constantly pulling away from your gums then there is most likely an issue with your denture. Poor fitting dentures can cause people to experience soreness in their mouth, problems eating and speaking, and having their teeth move around. Here are some of our solutions for when dentures no longer fit correctly:
- Reline dentures by adjusting the internal surface so they fit your mouth properly
- Create new dentures moulded perfectly to the shape of your gums
- Replace them with dental implants
At our bespoke denture clinic, our dentists will discuss the options with you and help you come to the best solution. Don’t stress about your dentures when you could have a free consultation and get all the advice you need! For advice on poor fitting dentures, read out blog post.
Damaged Denture
Dentures can get damaged for various reasons, such as being dropped on hard surfaces or just succumbing to general wear and tear. When you notice that your denture is damaged, it is important to come to a reliable bespoke denture clinic to get it repaired. Using damaged dentures can lead to soreness in your mouth and cause damage to your gums, so it is essential they are fixed as soon as possible. Typically, a dentist can fix simple damage the same day, though a more complicated repair may need to be sent to a specialist dental laboratory, usually repaired within 48 hours.
